We have good news and bad news for fans of the Porsche 911 GT2. The good news is that there’s one up for auction right now that could be the cheapest you’ll ever find. The bad news is that it’s pretty thoroughly wrecked.
It’s a 2008 model of the 997 generation – one of only 194 examples that were brought into the United States.
The pinnacle of the 911 family, the GT2 model – as any Porschephile could tell you – combines the hardcore nature of the GT3 with the forced-induction engine of the Turbo model. The 997 packed a 3.6-liter twin-turbo boxer-six, kicking out 523 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels alone, giving it the nickname “the Widowmaker.”
It could hustle to 62 in 3.6 seconds, and top out at some 204 mph. That is, assuming you could manage to keep all that power under control – no easy feat considering that it’s all concentrated around the rear wheels in an inherently unbalanced design.
The owner of this one couldn’t, apparently, and appears to have crashed pretty hard. The nose is bashed in, and from the look of it, the front suspension and steering rack are probably pretty messed up, too.
Fortunately the rear end looks pretty much in tact. Aside from the airbags having deployed, the cabin looks fine, too. And the engine apparently still works. But we wouldn’t count on the frame being in its original shape.
Worth fixing? Hard to say. But if you’re the gambling type, the wreckage is currently listed on Copart. The opening bid of $31,500 had yet to be placed at the time of writing, with three days left until the auction closes.
