Way back in 1904, a Rolls-Royce drove 14,371 miles non-stop, setting a new world record. The car was dubbed the Silver Ghost in celebration of the feat. Now, 114 years later, the same automaker is launching a special series of that car’s spiritual successor, to honor the original.
Strictly limited to a run of 35 examples, the Silver Ghost Collection takes the modern Ghost saloon in an even more exclusive direction. Each will be done up in Cassiopeia Silver with a hand-painted coachline with actual silver particles.
The Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament is crafted from solid sterling silver, with a black-gold-plated hammered copper base sitting atop a black-vaned grille.
The cabin is being done up in Forest Green leather, just like the record-setting original from over a century ago. Silver-tipped leather adorns the interior door panels, with silver-onlaid open-poor wood trim and a special dashboard clock. The center console houses a watch, sunglasses, and pen, there’s a special picnic hamper in the trunk… even the oak-handled umbrellas in the doors are unique to the special edition.
“The extraordinary accomplishments of our marque’s founding fathers are honoured by the creation of this elegant ‘Silver Ghost Collection’,” said Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös. “The Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective masterfully weave the rich narrative of the original ‘Silver Ghost’ into just 35 motor cars, creating a contemporary homage to the original motor car. Today, our craftspeople and master artisans continue this legacy of excellence, creating unique motor cars that define luxury.”
Along with the special series, Rolls-Royce has also updated the Ghost for 2018, with a grille pushed further forward and fitted with deeper-set grille vanes. The front bumper has been redesigned, the cabin is quieter thanks to improved acoustics and sound dampening, the infotainment system has been upgraded, and the 21-inch wheels are new, too. So even if you can’t get your hands on one of the Silver Ghost editions, the “standard” Ghost now promises to stand apart from others that have come before.
