191 is a pretty big number. Big enough, it turns out, to form a record number of GMC trucks that turned out for a parade recently.
Not in Detroit, where the company is based. It wasn’t in Texas, where the Yukon is made, nor was it in Missouri or Indiana where General Motors makes the Canyon and Sierra pickups. In fact it wasn’t anywhere in the United States, or even in North America (the Terrain being made in Mexico). It was in the United Arab Emirates.
The record procession took place with help from local police at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi as part of GCC Traffic Week. Pickups, crossovers, and sport-utes old and new showed up in droves, lead by a Sierra Denali towing a 30-meter flag with the portrait of the late Sheikh Zayed. All told, it stretched over four kilometers (roughly two and a half miles), nearly circling the entire 5.5-km (3.5-mile) circuit.
“It is such a great honor for the people of the UAE to celebrate the Year of Zayed and show this pride to a global audience,” said GMC Middle East chief Sajed Sbeih. “The GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title would not have been achieved without the significant contribution from Abu Dhabi Police and GMC owners and fans who came together at Yas Marina to create the world’s largest parade of GMC vehicles.”
The endeavor was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest procession. The record it broke, in case you were wondering, was set just down the Persian Gulf cost in Kuwait. 181 of the company’s trucks gathered on the 7th Ring Road there in November 2012.
