A prototype for the next-generation Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 has been scooped during winter tests in Scandinavia.
The current GLS has only been around for a few years but despite what its name implies, it wasn’t an all-new model when launched. Instead, it was simply a facelifted and re-badged model designed to replace the Mercedes-Benz GL which was last updated in 2012. With the large BMW X7 just around the corner, a significantly upgraded GLS is a necessity for the automaker.
Changes to the next-gen GLS will start under the skin with the implementation of the firm’s new flexible MHA platform, also set to be used by the future GLE. Additionally, the S-Class of SUVs will grow in stature but also drop some weight over the outgoing model.
In typical AMG fashion, the GLS 63 model will stand out from lesser variants thanks to aggressive body panels, quad exhausts, and of course, a different engine.
At this early stage, it remains unclear if the next-gen GLS 63 will retain the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 of the current model or instead make use of AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 but the latter is most probable. Either way, horsepower will be slightly improved over the 585 hp currently on offer.
Inside, the new GLS 63 will inevitably take inspiration from the other models in the Mercedes range and most likely feature the MBUX infotainment system that premiered with the all-new A-Class. Semi-autonomous features from the E-Class and S-Class can be expected as well.
