VW might have not revealed yet the all-new Touareg but this didn’t stop the car maker from inviting a few members of the press to sample a late prototype.
The third generation Touareg is predictably based on the Group’s MLB platform, which is also used on models like the Audi Q7 and the Porsche Cayenne. However, VW has given the Touareg its one bespoke tuning, backed up by a wheelbase that’s shorter by 70mm than the Q7’s.
The new VW Touareg is also lighter than the previous model and despite being a bigger car, thanks to the aforementioned platform. Base models will get steel coil springs, with VW to offer an air suspension, rear-wheel steering and active roll-bars as options.
The exterior design is expected to be inspired by the Arteon four-door coupe, meaning a front end with a wide grille that merges with the LED headlights. The interior will adopt the Group’s latest technologies, including the dual-display setup on the dashboard for the infotainment system and climate control module, as well as a digital instrument cluster.
The engine range will include two 3.0-liter V6 diesel units with 228hp and 282hp, as well as a 3.0-liter TSI V6 petrol with 335hp. Later down the line, the new VW Touareg will be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, as well as a more powerful V8 diesel.
The new VW Touareg will be officially revealed on March 23 in Beijing, China. Until then, let’s see what Car Mania has to say after a brief first taste of a camouflaged prototype.
