Audi recently used the New York Auto Show to introduce the RS5 Sportback and it appears the company is open to bringing an RS Avant stateside.

While a number of Americans have dreamed about the forbidden fruit known as the RS4 and RS6 Avant, they haven’t crossed the Atlantic as most consumers aren’t fond of wagons. This is visible elsewhere in Audi’s lineup as the only wagon currently offered in America is the A4 Allroad and that model is $3,000 more expensive than the Q5.

Speaking with Motor Trend, Audi of America’s vice president of product management said “We always look at potential new opportunities in the market.” Filip Brabec went on to say “We keep holding discussions. Keep writing us letters.”

While that should give consumers some hope, Audi Sport boss Michael Renz was less optimistic as he said “The RS 6 and RS 4 Avants are well accepted in Europe” but it “might be a different situation” in the United States. He went on to say the RS5 Sportback is different as it’s more of an image car that is for “young families who are looking for a sporty, fashion-oriented car with functionality that they can put the kids in.”

Just a few months ago, Audi of America president Scott Keogh said the company has a “surprise we’re working on” and hinted it was a cool European model that Audi hasn’t brought over to the United States yet. Both the RS4 and RS6 Avant would fit the bill but nothing is official as of yet.

In the meantime, Audi is putting the finishing touches on the RS7 Sportback and it will come to America “soon enough.” The latest rumors suggest the car could use a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine developing 605 PS (445 kW) in the base model and around 650 PS (478 kW) in the Performance variant.
