Brembo just unveiled what they call an “aesthetically revolutionary” brake caliper for high performance cars at the 2018 NY Auto Show.

The braking systems manufacturer achieved significant weight savings with this new design, specifically 400 grams per wheel. This, according to Brembo, allows it to have the best weight-to-stiffness ratio ever for a cast aluminum caliper: compared to other calipers with the same stiffness, this is 8% lighter.

In order to build it, Brembo implemented the use of topology optimization, a software tool that allows engineers to simulate the stiffness of a component and identify excess material. The result of this process is a new geometry for optimized performance. At the same time, drawing from over 45 years of motorsport experience also helped with the geometry and mass reduction.

Visually, aside from looking like a Batarang (Batman’s weapon of choice), the new caliper features minimized curves and material reduction in the piston area, which is part of the reason why Pagani chose it for its 720 HP Huayra supercar.

Brembo also says that the new caliper can be matched perfectly to the shape and colors of exclusive models, while also doing a better job at stopping these high-power exotics.
