Instead of unveiling the Levante GTS in Geneva, Maserati preferred to bring us the Nerissimo Edition, which gave the luxury SUV a more refined appearance, but nothing worth mentioning under the hood.
Now, our sources tell us that the new Levante GTS will break cover at the 2018 New York Auto Show next week, bringing with it a 550 HP V8 engine. If that’s not enough, it appears that a Levante Trofeo model could be unveiled right next to it, with an even stronger V8, rated at over 600 HP.
The new Levante GTS is said to be priced around $116,700, whereas the Trofeo could set you back $128,800, more than a 2019 Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
From what we’ve seen on a few camera-shy prototypes, the GTS version will rock larger air intakes than the regular Levante, improved aero, an upgraded suspension, larger wheels and bigger brakes in order to keep everything in check.
As for what the Trofeo model could look like, your guess is as good as ours. It’s rather unlikely that it would be as hardcore as the GranTurismo MC Trofeo, which came with a race-spec exhaust system, no ABS, race-spec suspension and unique wheels. Having more power than the GTS is more than enough to earn it the title of flagship model, although we wouldn’t mind also seeing the Levante with a more aggressive body kit, now that we think about it.
The 2018 NY Auto Show opens its gates to the public on March 30th and to the media on March 28th.
