The all-new VW Touareg is one of just a fleet of SUVs from the automaker which will go on sale by 2020.
At the Touareg’s global launch, Volkswagen announced that “at least 10 further SUVs [are] planned for the Chinese market by 2020.”
In recent years, demand for SUVs and crossovers has boomed throughout the world, particularly in China. As a matter of fact, forecasts from China suggest that every second new car in the country could soon be an SUV. Volkswagen isn’t wasting any time in making the most of this demand, announcing that four of these promised SUVs will arrive in China this year.
The first model in this expanded SUV family is currently known as the ‘Advanced Mid-Size SUV’ (the yellow one pictured) and is set to “target the elites in China who have high-end tastes.” It has been developed by the local FAW-VW joint venture.
A second SUV was also previewed during the Touareg event, dubbed the ‘Powerful Family SUV’ and finished in silver. It is essentially a smaller version of the Atlas and has been developed by SAIC-VW. A third SUV, this time the Tiguan L PHEV, has also been presented with a plug-in hybrid powertrain before a launch towards the end of this year.
After these SUVs reach Chinese dealerships, local buyers will welcome the VW Group’s MEB modular electric platform with the I.D. hatchback and subsequent I.D. models.
