Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe Brings Its Identity Crisis To America

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has arrived in New York to celebrate its North American debut.

Originally unveiled in Geneva, the high-performance model is billed as AMG’s first four-door sports car that “draws directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models.”

It’s actually a liftback and a good looking one at that

Getting the obvious out of the way, the model isn’t actually a four-door coupe as it features a rear hatchback like the Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera. The styling similarities to the AMG GT are also limited but the car has a Panamericana grille, a powerdome hood and slender LED tailights. Other highlights include frameless side windows, an adjustable rear spoiler and LED headlights.

The interior largely carries over from the E-Class but there are handful of sporty touches including a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel and a unique center console which recalls the AMG GT.

Two rear seat configurations will be available in the United States including individual carbon fiber shelled seats and an executive rear seat package. When the latter is selected, rear seat passengers will find a center console with a touchscreen that allows them to adjust settings such as the seat heaters and ambient lighting system.

Regular and Hybrid power on offer

Like the CLS 53, the GT4 can be equipped with a hybrid powertrain in ’53’ form that consists of a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 429 hp (320 kW) and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque. It is backed up by a small electric motor which contributes an additional 21 hp (15 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. Thanks to this setup and a standard all-wheel drive system, the GT 53 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 174 mph (280 km/h).

Buyers looking for the real AMG experience will need to opt for the GT 63 which has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine producing 577 hp (430 kW) and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) of torque. It is paired to nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission and an all-wheel drive system which enables the car to run from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds before topping out at 193 mph (310 km/h).

Of course, those seeking maximum performance can purchase the GT 63 S which features an upgraded V8 engine developing 630 hp (469 kW) and 664 lb-ft (899 Nm) of torque in the GT 63 S. The extra oomph results in a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 195 mph (313 km/h).

You’ll have to wait until next year to get it in the States

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will go on sale in the United States early next year in GT 63 and GT 63 S guise. It will eventually be joined by the GT 53 variant in the middle of the year.
