Pininfarina allegedly wants to transform from a design house to a fully-fledged luxury electric automaker.
During a speech to guests and VIPs at the Geneva Motor Show, chief executive Paulo Pininfarina said that parent company Mahindra was working on a luxury electric vehicle strategy, hinting that Pininfarina will be the firm to benefit.
“My father’s dream was to build a car company and his father’s dream was also to build a car company. Now I plan for that dream to come true,” Pininfarina said.
While Pininfarina is known almost exclusively as a producer of some of the most beautiful cars ever, it is actually in a reasonably good position to build electric vehicles. For the past four years, Mahindra has been competing in Formula E and Pininfarina could easily use the technologies and expertise from Formula E in future road cars.
The Italian design house has already shown what it is capable of with the H2 Speed Hydrogen. While only presented as a concept at this stage, Pininfarina intends on producing the vehicle in limited numbers.
An announcement about Pininfarina’s electric future could be just around the corner. In fact, Motor1 suggests the company will publicize its plans during Rome’s Formula E race on April 14.
