So, Porsche has finally revealed its first estate shooting brake with the new Sport Turismo version of the Panamera Turbo – but in order to claim the throne, first it has to have a little chat with the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate.

These two are basically supercar-munching station wagons packed with cutting-edge technologies and the latest twin-turbo powertrains that can make you question the reason for owning anything else.

The Panamera is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that makes 542hp and 567lb-ft of torque. Power goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo to 62 mph (100 km) in 3.6 seconds. Top speed is 188 mph (300 km/h).

Impressive figures indeed, at least until you take a look at the numbers laid down by the E63 S:  604hp and 627lb-ft of torque from AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, a 0-62mph sprint in 3.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 180mph (290). Like the Panamera, the E63 S comes with all-wheel drive that, nevertheless, gives you the option of disengaging the front driveshafts, while the gearbox is AMG’s nine-speed MCT unit.

Despite having more power, the Mercedes is also significantly cheaper than the Panamera, priced at £91,290 in the UK against the £118,502 Porsche is asking for the Turbo Sport Turismo. The difference between them is the price of a brand new VW Golf GTI.
