The Passat CC was only offered as a four-door coupe, but its more upscale replacement, the Volkswagen Arteon, could actually welcome a second body style.

Nothing is official yet, but there is a chance that we could see a Shooting Brake version of the new Arteon, reports AutoExpress, after talking to one of the company’s chiefs for medium and full-size cars, Elmar-Marius Licharz.

“I would like to make a Shooting Brake – these plans are underway, but it’s not yet final”, Licharz said.

In addition to mulling an Arteon Shooting Brake, the German automaker is also planning to launch a new powertrain for the stylish sedan. And it’s not electrified in any way, for now at least, as it’s actually a six-cylinder engine. There is already a prototype out testing with the unit, and if it gets positive feedback, then expect to see it in the Atlas, too.

“If we build a six-cylinder engine, we are discussing it for the Arteon. We have built one already in a prototype vehicle. It will be one which you can also use in the Atlas and vice versa”, added Licharz.

By offering a six-banger fpr the Arteon, Volkswagen is strengthening its position against more premium rivals, such as its cousin, the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe. At the same time, it’s also stepping away from the Skoda and SEAT brands.
