Volkswagen has revealed that the ‘Advanced Mid-Size SUV’ it unveiled in China last week could make its way to other markets as well.
Premiering alongside the latest-generation Touareg and a second China-only SUV, dubbed the ‘Powerful Family SUV’, the mid-size model was developed by the local FAW-VW joint venture.
Discussing the vehicle with Auto Express, VW boss for technical development Dr. Frank Welsch said the brand is researching other markets where the vehicle could be introduced.
“Today it’s purely for China, but I totally agree that it’s a very strong SUV and we are evaluating chances to maybe bring this to other countries as well. The design is great and so is the technology,” he commented.

In the initial press release announcing the Advanced Mid-Size SUV, Volkswagen said it will “target the elites in China who have high-end tastes.” Of course, Chinese aren’t the only ones with high-end tastes, and VW obviously sees demand for such a vehicle elsewhere, which might or might not be European and/or the US markets.
The Advanced Mid-Size SUV forms part of Volkswagen’s plan of introducing at least 10 SUVs in China by 2020. This bold plan comes on the back of booming demand for such models in the world’s largest car market, with some forecasts indicating that every second new car in the People’s Republic could soon be an SUV.
