Back in October, Volkswagen announced it would attack Pikes Peak with a new electric hillclimb racer. In the process, it gave us a shadowy peek at the prototype it’s working on. Now it’s showing us some details.
Released on the Volkswagen News Twitter feed are two new images previewing the vehicle in question – one showing the corner of the nose from above, the other a portion of the rear.
The images provide a glimpse of the extreme aero package that, outlandish as it may look, has become typical of challengers in the Unlimited class in which the VW will be competing. There’s a front splitter that looks like it could host a reenactment of the Last Supper, a rear wing that could hold an encyclopedia or two, and a stabilizer fin that’d put a Great White shark’s to shame.
Most of that we could already see from the previous image. What we’re getting this time is a taste of the details. It appears to share some futuristic design elements in common with VW’s latest ID electric vehicle concepts, like the ID Vizzion, ID Crozz, and ID Buzz. (Or that flying robot thing from Pixar’s WALL-E.)
Perhaps more telling than what the images show, however, is the timing of their release. Now several months since the initial announcement and with a few more to go before the event takes place in Colorado, we get the feeling that the German automaker is preparing to reveal the new racer in full. So keep your eyes peeled. (Or better yet, let us do that for you, and just watch this space.)
