Classic blockbuster movies don’t have a thing in front of Grand Theft Auto V, which gained the title of the most successful media title of all time.
The insanely popular video game has sold more than 90 million units since its launch in 2013, making a total of around $6 billion and placing far above movies like Star Wars or even Avatar, which is the highest grossing movie of all time.
But the biggest surprise is the fact that GTA V continues bringing in hundreds of millions in revenue, more than four years after its original launch, becoming the sixth best-selling videogame in the US in 2017, according to a report from Marketwatch.
The colossal success of the GTA V was helped by offering the video game on all major platforms while the addition of the online multiplayer option has kept its momentum going through all these years.
The video game industry is booming, with investors already seeing it as a more lucrative and profitable business, compared to making films and other media. “Videogames are a much better business than [movie] studios,” said KeyBanc analyst Evan Wingren to Marketwatch.
“Games in general have the enviable position that their content is interactive, which allows them to make data-driven insights and adjust games and business models that benefits players and the company,” he added.
