Most luxury saloon owners are probably not in a hurry to destroy other cars in a straight line whenever they pull up to a stop light. But those who are have plenty of options to choose from.
One of them hails from Alpina and is basically an upgraded BMW 7-Series, whose 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 engine has been massaged to deliver 608 PS (600 HP) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) to the xDrive all-wheel drive system.
Alpina claims that it will hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 3.6 seconds. If you keep going, you’ll eventually max out at 193 mph (310 km/h), which will land you pretty high up on the Autobahn “food chain”.
During a recent drag racing event, a B7 was put to the test against a bunch of other quick cars that included a Mercedes-AMG C63 S, an older-model E63 S, an Audi RS6 Avant and an RS3 Sportback.
The Alpina looks truly formidable when launching, almost pulling off a semi-believable Tesla Model S impersonation in the way it covers ground. At least a couple of its rivals should, in theory, prove challenging to overcome, but in the end the Alpina was absolutely amazing.
