Audi is said to be on the verge of approving a tiny Q1 SUV for production with a launch date before the end of 2020.
Auto Express reports that the entry-level Audi Q1 will be based around the next-generation A1 set to launch later this year. As a result, the SUV will utilize the smallest version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform currently underpinning the Seat Ibiza and VW Polo.
While Audi has stopped short of confirming the vehicle, company sales and marketing boss Bram Schot recently told the UK publication that ever-increasing demand for SUVs may force Audi’s hand.
“You cannot ignore the SUV trend; the question is how wide and how deep do we make the programme with SUVs?
“Depending on the business opportunities, we decide on the future product portfolio. But don’t be surprised if in two or three years you do see the car, as we try to react fast to markets,” he said.
As the Q1 will use the MQB platform, it will share its petrol and diesel engines with other models in the VW family. Included in the range should be a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo petrol, a 1.5-liter turbo petrol, and a 1.6-liter diesel. There’s a chance that some form of 48V mild-hybrid system could also be offered to Q1 customers.
