The latest crop of super saloons is now completed with the arrival of the new BMW M5, which means it’s time to get flooded with various drag races and acceleration tests.
The latest comes from Sport Auto, which pits the new BMW M5 against the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cadillac CTS-V.
The German magazine published a video showing the instrument dials of all four models during their acceleration testing, giving us an idea of what it means to have over 600hp under your right foot.
Despite Sport Auto not providing any figures with the video (you’ll have to buy their latest issue for that), it’s pretty evident of which two models compete for the title of the fastest 0-300km/h (186mph).
You guessed it, the speedo in the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S show more eagerness on their way to the big three-zero-zero figure, with third place going to the hybrid Porsche -which is the most powerful here and also the heaviest by a lot- and fourth in the Caddy –which is the only rear-driver car in the group.
Picking a definitive winner between the BMW and the Mercedes has proven to be a trick question to answer, with previous drag races so far delivering mixed results.
The E63 S offers 604 hp (612 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque against the BMW M5’s 592hp (600 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque but the Merc is also heavier by over 100kg (220lbs) so both models are really close to each other when it comes to straight-line performance.
