Toyota only started taking orders for the 2019 Avalon earlier this week, but Consumer Reports have already gotten their hands on a couple of models to test.

The first one uses the 301hp 3.5-liter V6 engine, with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, whereas the other is more eco-friendly, by carrying a 2.5-liter unit and an electric motor, connected to a CVT.

Almost instantly, the reviewer found them to be light on their feet and composed, noticing that the adaptive suspension that comes with the former makes it more exciting to drive. But that comes at a cost, albeit one that’s expected, and in particular, a firmer ride.

Just like the exterior, with its moustache-like grille, the cabin has been given a major redesign, too. Toyota’s designers put a lot of effort into making the new Avalon, and you’re bound to notice the better materials used throughout.

The floating-style infotainment system is standard on all trim levels, but to get the head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, heated rear seats and other such features means upgrading to a higher spec, or checking the options list.

As expected from Toyota’s flagship sedan, the Avalon offers plenty of legroom for the rear passengers. However, headroom is a bit affected by fitting the batteries of the hybrid under the rear bench.

Soundproofing isn’t ideal, as the engine noise can interrupt your conversation, but let’s see what else CR had to say about it in the short video below.
