Even though all these cars are virtual, the racing that’s taking place is all too real and the stakes are actually extremely high.
The best part is that you don’t even need to be a professional racing driver; all you need is a copy of Codemaster’s F1 2017 and an online account registered to either Xbox Live, PlayStation Network or Steam (for PC users).
The footage you’re seeing here is from Round 1 of the 2018 qualifiers. In the end, only the top 40 gamers will get the chance to compete in the Pro Draft, from where they can be signed by an actual Formula 1 team and become its official Esport driver.
In order to qualify for the Pro Draft in July, you’ll need to be among the fastest 10 players on each of the three platforms (Xbox, PS4, PC) and take part in a live-streamed event (covering a 25% race distance) around Shanghai International Circuit. Other venues include Baku, Barcelona and Monaco.
You might not get to experience all the glitz and glam of being an actual Formula 1 racing driver, but this has got to be the next best thing. Besides, being employed by Mercedes AMG Petronas, Red Bull Racing, Force India, Williams, Renault Sport F1, Haas F1, McLaren, Toro Rosso or Alfa Romeo Sauber is, in itself, very special, even if it’s just for gaming.
