The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door is still a somewhat polarizing product. It’s not as sporty as the 2-door version, which is a genuine supercar, yet it promises to entertain its driver more than any CLS or E-Class would.
You might say that it has a crisis of identity, which we’ve done, but according to Mercedes, its main purpose is to “draw directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models,” while serving as Affalterbach’s first-ever proper four-door sports car.
The car was originally unveiled in Geneva last month, boasting a trademark Panamericana grille, a powerdome hood, frameless windows, an adjustable rear spoiler and sleek LED taillights. Inside, you get a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays and a center console with color display buttons – another first for AMG.
This particular example, spotted very recently by MercedesFreak in Nurburg, offers us a great look at its very aggressive exterior, while also revealing that it’s either the 63 4Matic+ or 63 S 4Matic+ model, despite lacking any badges.
What gives its performance away is the design of the rear fascia, which houses large rectangular tailpipes, as opposed to round ones as you’d find on the entry-level GT 53 model – that’s the one that’s powered by a 435 PS (429 HP) plug-in hybrid powertrain.
As for the 63 and 63 S versions, the former packs 585 PS (576 HP) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, while the latter is good for 639 PS (630 HP) and 663 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. The best the ‘S’ will do in a straight line is hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds, before maxing out at 195 mph (315 km/h).
