Mercedes will reportedly use the Beijing Motor Show to introduce the all-new A-Class sedan.
Based on the redesigned hatchback, the A-Class sedan will complete with the Audi A3 and the BMW 1-Series sedan which is available exclusively in China. While the model will have a lot in common with the next-generation Mercedes CLA, the A-Class sedan will have conservative styling that mimics the C-Class.
The interior is expected to be shared with the hatchback and this means we can expect a three-spoke steering wheel, circular air vents and the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system. The latter has two displays that measure 7- or 10.25-inches.
Engine options are expected to carryover from the hatchback so petrol choices will likely include a 1.33-liter four-cylinder with 163 PS (120 kW) and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder developing 224 PS (165 kW). Later on, there will be high-performance AMG variants including an A35 with more than 300 PS (220 kW) and an A45 producing upwards of 400 PS (294 kW).
While BMW only offers the 1-Series sedan in China, Mercedes will follow in the footsteps of Audi and offer A-Class sedan in a variety of markets including the United States. As Mercedes sales and marketing boss, Britta Seeger, explained last year “It’s a very attractive car for younger people but not only for younger people. It can have a broad audience because it’s a nice entrance into the Mercedes-Benz family.”
Mercedes won’t be the only German automaker with major introductions as Autobild is reporting BMW will use the show to introduce the M2 Competition. The model is rumored to have an M4-sourced engine which has been detuned to produce around 410 PS (301 kW).
BMW Chairman Harald Krüger has also hinted the company could unveil a concept version of the iX3. It will preview the production model which will arrive in 2020.
