It’s one of the most classic battles in the car world: the BMW M5 versus the Mercedes-AMG E63 S.
Every time these two meet for the last decade or so, deciding which is the better car has been a tricky thing to answer, and the same applies to their latest generations.
Forget the silly drag races or lap times, we all know that super saloons will be used as daily drivers for 99 percent of their life. The idea of having a 600hp four-door executive sedan that can pretty much decimate pure sports cars with its performance is still pretty absurd, but that’s the kind of world we live in.
Both of them use pretty much the same formula: twin-turbo V8s with almost the same power, automatic transmissions instead of dual-clutch ones and a configurable all-wheel drive system that can shut down its front driveshafts to let you explore your inner Drift champion.
Putting aside their design -which as always is a subjective matter- this comparison will be judged on the details. It will be purely up to the talent of the engineering teams over at BMW M and Mercedes AMG, just because the two super saloons look so similar on paper.
The latest BMW M5 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 producing 592hp (600 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque whereas the Mercedes-AMG E63 S gets a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 604 hp (612 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque.
BMW claims a 0-100km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, the same with the E63 S. The BMW M5 is the one that feels faster on the road, at least according to Autocar’s latest video review.
