Third generations and 21 years – that’s how long the Toyota Avensis lasted, as the automaker has ended production in Burnaston, Derbyshire, UK, Autocar says.
Unlike cars such as the Ford Mondeo, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Volkswagen Passat or Skoda Superb, the Avensis wasn’t that popular. In fact, only 25,319 units were moved across Europe last year, or half than what the Mondeo achieved.
“We are monitoring the D-Segment, as it declines and suffers from heavy discounting”, a Toyota spokesperson told the British publication. The same peson also suggested what was already known for a year and a half: the Avensis might not be replaced by a new generation.
Instead, the carmaker could introduce a four-door version of the new generation Auris, which is also available in the US as the 2019 Corolla. The compact car is smaller than the Avensis, but it should still attract those looking for a Toyota sedan.
Things don’t look good either when it comes to the Avensis Tourer, which was even less popular than the sedan.
The Avensis was last updated at the end of 2016. The vehicle received a red paint and some new 18-inch alloy wheels, which wasn’t really what customers were expecting from a car that was already nine years old.
