In a bid to cut down on texting-and-driving related accidents in Sweden, Volkswagen and brand management company NordDDB have released a series of phone cases that use metal from vehicles damaged in road accidents.

The introduction of the phone cases comes shortly after a law was passed in Sweden to make it illegal to use a phone while driving. The law, passed at the start of February, has yet to impact the country’s accident rate. This is where the phone cases come in.

VW will produce just 153 examples of the cases, the same number of serious road accidents that occurred in Sweden in February.

Volkswagen brand manager Johan Karlsson said the cases act as a “silent reminder” to not check your phone while behind the wheel.

All the proceeds generated by selling the cases will go to Swedish accident survival and rehabilitation group Trafikskadefonden, and help those who have been injured in a road accident. All the cases are handmade and feature a unique number.

The idea is interesting to say the least. On one hand, we think it’s extremely important to remind people not to use their mobile devices while driving. On the other hand, it is slightly morbid to use materials from the cars which people have been hurt or killed in.

What do you think of the cases?
