Here’s a prime example of how you should definitely not merge onto a motorway. The person driving the dashcam vehicle caused another driver to lose control, and is therefore indirectly responsible for the ensuing collision.
The footage starts off with the car trying to merge directly into the fast lane, seemingly unaware of an approaching VW Golf Mk3, whose driver had to swerve in order to avoid making contact. They then lose control of the vehicle before crashing into another Golf, this time an MK4 Variant.
While the title of the video contains the words ‘Major” and “Overreaction”, it makes very little sense for us to focus on what the driver of the Mk3 Golf could have done better. Besides, it’s not like they had access to any sort of stability control.
Yet, it was the Mk4 Golf Variant that suffered most, sandwiched between the out-of-control car and a small truck. We can clearly see both the driver and passenger airbags deploy upon contact with the guardrail. Hopefully everybody on-board was alright.
In conclusion, as far as merging goes, this was a very poor attempt. So whether it’s one or multiple lanes you’re trying to bypass, make sure you’re fully aware of any incoming traffic from behind. It’s never just your behind on the line.
