If you’re the type of person who enjoys driving rare, yet quirky cars, then bidding on a 1990 Avanti Touring Sedan suddenly starts making sense. Although, it’s hard to envision this as a “daily” in today’s world.
The four-door Avanti came about in the late 80s, when company owner John Cafaro decided it was time to try something different with the nameplate. Word has it, only 90 sedans were built, making this a pretty exclusive ride.
As for this particular car, it’s a silver over grey model, and it’s currently being auctioned off on Bring a Trailer. According to the ad, it boasts the following standard features: front disc brakes, climate control, leather seats, cruise control, integrated roll cage, 18-gallon fuel tank, power steering, power locks, power windows, power side mirrors and a powered trunk release.
We also spot an electric moonroof, a Sony head unit and an optional CRT television, positioned between a pair of fold-down picnic trays in the back.
Is that a V8 underneath the hood?
It sure is. It’s a GM-sourced 5.0-liter 170 HP (172 PS) 305ci V8, mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine reportedly has 88,000 miles (141,600 km) on the clock, and sits on a Chevy Caprice chassis.
According to the car’s window sticker, it had an MSRP of just over $52,000 when new. It’s more than what you would have spent on a BMW 735i at the time.
