By launching the all-new M5 Competition, BMW has finally created a midsize super-sports saloon that’s more powerful than its direct rival from Mercedes-Benz.

Where the mighty Mercedes-AMG E63 S uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, with 612 PS (604 HP) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque, the M5 Competition answers back with 625 PS (617 HP), thanks to a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 that also produces 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).

It has more power than the regular M5 and it’s also faster to 100 km/h (62 mph) and 200 km/h (124 mph) by 0.1 and 0.3 seconds respectively, the latter figure being equal to putting 17 meters (55.7 feet) between you in the M5 Comp, and somebody in a regular M5.

This video, courtesy of BMW M, talks about what went into making the M5 Competition so competitive (no pun intended), like the increased spring rate (10% stiffer) or the new engine mounts. The result of these upgrades is a more direct engine response with “immediate transmission of power” to the drivetrain.

Last but not least are the 20-inch forged alloy wheels and the M Sport exhaust, making the car more noisy (in a good way) while in Sport+ mode.

The BMW M5 Competition, which also comes with special seat belts, unique floor mats and a custom instrument cluster, is priced from $110,995 in the U.S., with production scheduled to commence in July.
