Wicked weather is currently hitting the Midwestern United States and causing hundreds of thousands of power outages. However, things could have been much worse as two dealerships in Cullman, Alabama, will undoubtedly tell you.
About a month and a half ago, the town was hit by a freak hailstorm and the Cullman Times notes some pieces of hail were as large as softballs. Unsurprisingly, this caused a significant amount of damage and both Mitch Smith Chevrolet and Tony Serra Nissan were hit hard.
The storm damaged hundreds of new vehicles on both dealership lots. In the case of the Chevrolet dealership, one salesperson told WHNT19 that he estimated the damage could exceed $4 million.
The dealerships weren’t the only ones with major vehicle damage as Cullman Police Chief Kenny Culpepper told the Cullman Times that “three maybe four patrol cars [were] damaged from the hail.” The Cullman County Sheriff’s Department had it even worse as 15-20 vehicles were damaged by the storm.
The hailstorm was part of a larger system which reportedly spawned at least one tornado and another funnel cloud. Besides damage from the hail, the storm knocked out power to over a thousand residents and brought down numerous tree limbs.
A number of the damaged vehicles from Tony Serra Nissan are now up for auction on Copart as part of their “hail damaged buyout.” The site lists a total of 62 different vehicles including everything from Altimas and Armadas to Frontiers and Titans.
Some of the current bids are less than a $1,000 but the vehicles will need some work as many have dented hoods, broken lights and other damage. If you’re not too concerned about cosmetic imperfections, then you might be able to pick up a new Nissan for a fraction of its original price.
