Thanks to the immensely successful iPhone X, pretty much every new flagship smartphone out there already does or will feature a notch design. Just ask the likes of LG, Huawei, Asus, OnePlus and others.

Yet, not everybody is thrilled with the idea of giving up additional screen real estate, and while some find them cool, notches tend to do just that, breaking up the display’s symmetry, if you will.

Take Christian Schwamkrug for example. He’s the design director of Porsche Design, and he recently came out against smartphones with notched displays, saying that he didn’t want to allow the new Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS to have such a feature.

“When I saw the notch for the first time, I nearly couldn’t believe it. It’s disturbing, from a design philosophy. A picture is either rectangular or square, with a border line, and a clear frame format. I like symmetry. I didn’t want to have the notch, I think it’s a compromise,” said Schwamkrug in an interview with Digital Trends.

Sony’s VP of smartphone design, Taz Kajima, feels pretty much the same way, saying that notches “always affect the user interface” and that his team tried to maintain a square user interface as much as possible, following the release of the Xperia XZ2.

As for the new Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS, it features a metal and glass build, a 6-inch OLED display, Kirin 970 chipset, 256 GB of internal storage, 6 GB of RAM, a 40 MP rear-facing camera, 24 MP front camera, in-screen fingerprint sensor, a massive 4,000 mAh battery and it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Available accessories include the customized leather smart flip cover, Porsche Design premium stereo headset, USB-C cable, 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter and UK and EU charger plugs.
