Even though this accident probably occurred long ago, the footage is sufficiently scary to serve its purpose, namely make people make people think twice before slaloming through traffic at high speed.
Perhaps sufficiently scary is an understatement, though. Anything could have happened to this guy, who saw fit to drive his E46 BMW M3 like he stole it, with the car clearly struggling for grip under acceleration. Therefore, he could have easily rolled it, flipped it, or totaled it.
Losing control at such high speed often results in a lot of damage to the car, and sometimes its occupants. The E46 3-Series wasn’t exactly known for its excellent safety rating, offering marginal towards weak protection for its driver in frontal collisions – and that’s with the seat belt on.
In this video, the driver isn’t even wearing one, which makes what his behavior totally irresponsible. As luck would have it, the M3 bounced off the guardrail and back onto the second lane, while still moving really fast. That’s when it barely missed smashing into another vehicle, which was way more of a close call than the initial slalom that caused the rear end to drift wide.
Also, if you look close, that blurry yellow light between the rev gauge and the speedometer indicates that the DSC system (Dynamic Stability Control) was off. Which, of course, is nice when you want to have fun on a twisty road, but not that much if you don’t know where the car’s (or your…) limits are.
