In its attempt to achieve a critical mass of connected vehicles able to positively impact overall traffic safety, Volvo’s cars and trucks are teaming up over the cloud. Volvo Trucks is now officially the first-ever company to receive shared safety data from Volvo Cars.
Starting this year, live and anonymized data will be shared between certain Volvo trucks sold in Sweden and Norway, with the company’s passengers cars equipped with Hazard Light Alert system.
This technology is the first of its kind in the automotive industry. The way it’s described is that as soon as any Hazard Light Alert-equipped Volvo switches on its hazards, an alert is sent to all nearby Volvo cars connected to the cloud service. The technology is meant to be particularly useful around blind corners and over the crest of hills.
Hazard Light Alert has been available in both Sweden and Norway since 2016, and is fitted as standard to all 90 and 60 series models as well as the new XC40 crossover. Adding select Volvo Trucks models to the mix, means covering more area and identifying more potential hazards.
“Sharing real-time safety data based on our connected safety technology can help avoid accidents,” stated Malin Ekholm, VP of the Volvo Cars Safety Center. “The more vehicles we have sharing safety data in real time, the safer our roads become. We look forward to establishing further collaborations with other partners who share our commitment to traffic safety.”
