Certain units of the new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 are being subjected to a recall, which was recently announced by General Motors.

The safety campaign covers almost 500 examples of the 2019MY ZR1, which may have an issue with the deployment of the airbags, reports AutoNews.

Citing a document sent out by GM, the news outlet says that the sensing diagnostic module (SDM) is to blame. The part could malfunction “if exposed to extremely hard braking and sustained acceleration events under certain track conditions”.

Moreover, “the SDM may enter a fault state and will not return to normal operation until battery power is removed from the system”, according to GM. “In this faulted state, the SDM will not provide crash sensing or deploy airbags in the event of a crash”, so the risk of injury or even death is increased as a result.

The automaker estimates the problem to be affecting only 1 percent of the 498 Corvette ZR1s included in this recall.

According to Jalopnik, the issue was discovered at the end of April by GM’s engineers during a media event at the Road Atlanta track, which also included some pre-production cars.

The investigation opened on May 8, and owners of the potentially affected Corvette ZR1s should hear from the company, which will inform them of the condition via mail, starting June 29. The fix will see technicians reprogram the device, and will be made free of charge.
