A Ferrari 250 GTO with a rich history has just become the world’s most expensive car ever, as it sold for a startling $80 million, according to multiple sources.
The 250 GTO Series 1, chassis number 4153 GT, made its competitive debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1963, where it finished fourth. It went on to win the Tour de France in 1964 and is widely regarded as one of the top three or four GTOs anywhere in the world.
Drive reports that the buyer is WeatherTech chief executive David MacNeil who owns a plethora of other classic Ferrari models.
Speaking to The Daily Express, vehicle acquisition specialist James Cottingham commented that 4153 GT is highly original and one of the best to ever change hands.
“This is without doubt one of the best 250 GTOs in existence in terms of history and originality.
“Its period competition is very good. It won the Tour de France which is big tick and was fourth overall at Le Mans which was a mega result. It was raced by Ecurie Francorchamps, who are one of the most iconic and famous independent Ferrari teams, it has never had a big accident and it is highly original,” Cottingham said.
It is unclear what MacNeil intends on doing with his new purchase, but he does have a penchant for displaying and racing some of his most prized classics.
According to Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, a 250 GTO will sell for in excess of $100 million within the next five years.
