Some high-end automakers offer stripped-out versions of their street-legal cars that are labelled as race cars for the road.
Most of the times, they cost a fortune to buy, and maintenance isn’t exactly affordable either.
However, most (if not all) are not racers with number plates tucked on. That would be pretty impractical for everyday use, so customers have to make do with the next best thing.
And yet, if you know where to look, you could land yourself a true racer that’s been retired for a fraction of the price. Like this Chevrolet Monte Carlo, for example.
Made in 2006 and fielded by Waltrip Racing, the NASCAR racer is said to have started life as a 1990s Darrell Waltrip Tabasco Pontiac. Later on, it was apparently rebodied as a Monte Carlo for Michael Waltrip, and put through its paces in various NASCAR events.

Its racing days have ended, however, and the car is now up for grabs. RMSothebys estimates that it might change hands for $30,000-$40,000 at Auburn, Indiana, during the auction that takes place between August 30 and September 2.
Power comes from a 355cu-in V8 engine, which features Pontiac Racing 18-degree cylinder heads with wide ports, high compression/small combustion chambers with matching manifold and a 850-cfm Holley carburetor, according to the auction house.
Bidders should also know that this Monte Carlo uses a four-speed manual transmission, which, along with the clutch, are described as being “in good, operable condition” and that it has a Griffith radiator and four-wheel disc brakes.
The exterior of the racer retains the original sponsor decals and still has some visible battle scars. The cockpit looks ready for the driver, and anyone sitting behind the wheel will definitely have a blast taking this ex-NASCAR racer out.
So, do you have the need for speed? Do you feel like taking to a track and dropping the hammer? If yes, then this Chevy is waiting…
