McLaren says it is unlikely that it will sell any vehicles for under $200,000 in the United States.
During an interview with Automotive News, McLaren North America president Tony Joseph said the Sports Series will remain the British marque’s most affordable range of vehicles.
“Not necessarily,” Joseph said when quizzed about a new baby model. “We did launch the Sports Series two years ago, which started just under $200,000.
“Now with the Spider, you’re at $210,000 on up with options. I don’t foresee us having anything below $200,000,” he said.
If you want a McLaren, you better start saving.
McLaren has repeatedly said that it won’t venture into the SUV market, ruling out a possible Lamborghini Urus rival that could cost less than $200,000. Additionally, the British marque told the motoring press in late 2015 that it wasn’t considering a new model to rival the Porsche Cayman.
While Ferrari and Lamborghini are increasing their annual production figures, McLaren seems content to remain more of a niche player in the market. Last year, the brand sold 3340 vehicles around the world. By comparison, Lamborghini sold 3815 cars but that figure should more than double with the Urus now on the market. Ferrari delivered 8398 units in 2017 and with an SUV on the way, that figure will continue to rise over the coming years.
While McLaren isn’t interested in a sub-Sports Series model, we wouldn’t be upset in the slightest if such a vehicle did come to fruition. After all, you can never have too many affordable mid-engine sports cars, can you?
