Want a rotary engine? Your choices pretty much come down to a Mazda – the RX-7, and RX-8 and the like. But someone’s slotted one of Mazda’s famed Wankel engines into something altogether different. And it’s coming up for sale.
Called the Angry Mosquito, it’s an extensively modified 1959 Fiat 600. And as you can see (and hear) for yourself in the video below, it sounds like little else on the road.
The restomod Fiat packs a Mazda 12A rotary engine in the back that’s been extensively tuned. It features dual 40mm Weber carbs and a four-speed Volkswagen manual transmission. And it’s been engineered, according to the auctioneer, “to perform like a mid-engine sports car.”
Tipping the scales at just 1,300 pounds and packing 220 horsepower, it boasts a power-to-weight ratio of just 5.9 pounds per horsepower. That puts it in the same league, relatively speaking, as a Chevy Camaro ZL1, and well ahead of a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat – vehicles that comfortably weigh three times as much. It also has a full roll cage to keep it both solid and safe, and an aluminum radiator with a propped-up lid to keep the engine running cool.
Missouri-based dealer Motoexotica (which put out the video) sold the Angry Mosquito a few years ago for just under $35k. And now it’s coming back up for grabs, consigned to Barrett-Jackson for its upcoming Northeast sale later this month, where it’s listed with no reserve price. So if you hope to take it home, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, will be the place to be the weekend of June 21-23.
