At the time of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon’s launch, it was the quickest accelerating production car in the world. It didn’t hold that title very long, however. Now even Dodge admits that the muscle car no longer holds this title.

In a recent Dodge advert that appeared on Facebook, Dodge asserts that the Demon is the “world’s fastest 0-100-mph production car.” However, if you cast your eyes down to the bottom of the image, you’ll notice a disclaimer that says “Excludes non-mass production vehicles and hybrids/electrics.”

Dodge asserts that the Demon can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in a blistering 2.3 seconds. While that time is achievable, it can only be done so in absolutely optimal conditions and with an experienced driver behind the wheel.

To the contrary, electric vehicles, particularly those from a well-known company that starts with a big “T”, are notoriously easy to get off the line, no matter how much limited seat time you may have. Over-the-air software updates also allow car manufacturers to improve the performance of their electric vehicles without the need for expensive and time-consuming mechanical modifications.

Another important thing to note about the Demon’s acceleration abilities is that they can only be maximized on a drag strip with drag tires on the rear and tiny wheels up front. A handful of videos have shown that when the Demon is taken on the road, it is extremely difficult to hook up and launch smoothly.

Is now the time manufacturers of internal combustion engine vehicles simply give up trying to compete with EVs in a straight line? It certainly looks like it.
