Opel is looking to redefine itself within the PSA Group, starting with an all-new design language that’s going to debut with an unnamed concept that will be revealed towards the end of the year.

Opel’s VP of Design Mark Adams and his team have revisited the company’s design philosophy in order to better showcase the brand’s values in future products.

The German car maker aims to make its cars look ‘bold’ and ‘pure’, starting with a new “Opel Compass” front-end treatment. Every future Opel’s face will feature design elements organized around two axes that intersect the brand emblem. The center-crease line on the bonnet will represent the vertical axis while the horizontal axis will be defined by the wing-shaped DRL signature.

“Strong proportions, simple but sculptural surfaces, bold graphics, and rare but extremely well executed details – the 2018 Brand Concept we are preparing continues to develop the principles we explored with the GT Concept,” said Mark Adams.

“There is a clear continuity and consistency in the way we express Opel’s values. However, we have taken several steps forward and are now setting the structure for the future face of Opel. This will be articulated around what we call the Opel Compass,” he added.

Opel wants its future models to become less complicated and more modern in their design, featuring simple forms with a strong identity.

“Opel design is emotional, sculptural and confident, we create exciting designs that stand out. We summarized this with the term bold. A second key aspect of German design is its clarity, intuitiveness and focus. This is captured in the term pure,” explained Adams.

Opel’s 2018 Brand Concept will be revealed before the end of the year, debuting the new styling direction for the company and giving us a better idea of what to expect from future models like the next Corsa supermini.
