If you ever see someone behaving strangely or dangerously on the road, the best (and smartest) course of action is to hang back and alert the authorities.
That’s exactly what one John Barrett did last week while traveling eastbound on I-195 (NJ), allowing his dashcam to capture the entire incident as it unfolded. The blue Corolla can be seen hitting road signs, spinning onto the grass and even bumping into another vehicle on the highway. Eventually, a state trooper caught up with the action.
The perpetrator, identified as 29-year old Joseph Scott was taken into custody and according to NBC New York, police found heroin and a syringe inside his vehicle, which will likely result in criminal charges.
“For me, it was more important to basically put my hazards on, drop behind him, to document. Not to pull him over,” said Barrett during a phone call with NJ Advance Media. “My wife and kids wouldn’t like that too much if I started playing fake cop.”
“The only time I thought there was going to be an issue was when my car was hit by debris,” added Barrett. “I’m never going to put myself at risk. I was more concerned about the safety of others.”
Aside from sideswiping a white SUV, the blue Corolla also nearly ended up in oncoming traffic after spinning out, but not before it destroyed a road sign, which is what caused the debris Barrett was referring to.
