Only four years since BMW launched the original X4, it replaced it with an entirely new generation, which was presented earlier this summer.
Codenamed G02, it is based on the third-gen X3, but adopts a sportier styling that positions it against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. Whether that rear end is good-looking is up for you to decide, but to us it doesn’t look that well sorted-out.
At the front, it looks pretty much like its more practical sibling, but at the other end, BMW’s designers have went wild on it, making everything look sportier – which, after all, justifies its raison d’etre.

Inside, things look very X3-ish, but that’s not a bad thing as there are plenty of premium materials such as soft-touch plastics and leather. CarBuyer, which test drove it, notes that everything feels nicely put together and there’s a great quality feel.
Storage space is good, too, as is the boot space, which is actually a bit more generous than what you’d get in a GLC Coupe, and you can squeeze up to three adults on the rear bench, although it’ll be a bit of a squeeze.
The entry-level Sport trim is well equipped, with 18-inch alloy wheels, parking sensors, adaptive headlights, sat-nav with real-time traffic information, dual-zone climate control and automatic tailgate, so everything one needs is pretty much there.
The question, though, is whether it live up to its sporty character once the road opens up ahead. The answer is that it’s one dynamic Bimmer – but we won’t spoil the rest of the review for you.
