If you’re in the market for an ultra-luxurious SUV with more than just strong performance but don’t want to wait for the upcoming M Division’s take on the X3 and X4, or simply prefer a powerful diesel, then Alpina wants a word with you.
The Buchloe-based brand has opened the order books for its new XD3 and XD4, with first deliveries set for the first quarter of 2019. Pricing for the new Alpina XD3 kicks off from 79,900 euros in Germany, while its coupe-SUV sibling starts from 82,900 euros. In the UK, the XD3 is priced from £57,900.
Under the bonnet of both models lives BMW’s quad-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six diesel engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. As you would expect, the numbers are quite impressive: 382hp (388PS) from 4,000 to 5,000rpm and 567lb-ft (770Nm) from just 1,750rpm and up to 3,000rpm.
Alpina says that the new XD3 and XD4 can accelerate from 0 to 62mph (100k/h) in 4.6 seconds, while flat-out they’ll do 165mph (267km/h) and 166mph (268km/h) respectively.
The chassis has been updated with Alpina’s own sports suspension that features electronically adjustable dampers along with shorter, stiffer springs. Four-piston brake calipers with 395mm discs at the front and 370mm discs at the back are offered as standard, and a set of composite brakes with larger rotors are optional.
BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system has been reconfigured, featuring specific torque distribution for Alpina’s latest SUV models. 20-inch wheels are fitted as standard, though customers can also specify bigger 22-inch lightweight forged items as an extra.
