BMW continues to chase weird records with the new M2 Competition in order to demonstrate the car’s agility and handling.

Their latest stunt brought them to Cape Town, South Africa, where the M2 Competition had to take on more than 87 straw poles in order to beat a previous record.

After months of preparation, according to director Oison Tymon, the compact coupe managed to destroy no less than 117 rolled-up bamboo mats in under 60 seconds. These were arranged in semi-circles so that the car could cut them on a drift, using a blade attached to the rear.

“This is a very tricky bit of driving, it is virtually impossible”, said stunt coordinator Marc Higgins. “The demands on the M2 Competition are immense. Every drift has to be performed with absolute precision; there is no room for error. A strong presence and agility naturally help a lot.”

Except for the razor-sharp blade, the rest of the car remains stock and gets the same technologies as the rest of the M2 Competitions out there. These include the two selector switches that allow drivers to adjust the engine, steering and Drivelogic functions accordingly.

Power comes from a new twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six engine that’s based on the unit used in the M3 and M4. It produces 410 PS (405 hp / 301 kW) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque, enough to help it hit 62 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.0 seconds, with the dual-clutch transmission.

BMW’s latest record-breaking run using the M2 Competition comes after the vehicle popped 79 balloons with a laser mounted on the grille somewhere in the United Kingdom.
