We’ve gone through this before, explaining just how dangerous it is to get behind the wheel when you’re not in top form. You might think that you can overcome the tiredness or drowsiness that you feel, but the thing is are actually putting yourself, your passengers and other road users at a big risk.
Moreover, overlap collisions, which tend to occur in two-direction roads without a divider between then, are quite dangerous for the simple reason that the car’s front end isn’t absorbing as much of the impact as it was designed to.
While it’s a little hard to tell, this looks more like a moderate overlap impact, although both types of collisions make intrusion into the passenger compartment a lot more likely than a full-width hit.
The car that hit the van is a VW Polo Sedan, which during ASEAN NCAP tests secured a 4-star rating, missing out on the top 5 stars only because ESC wasn’t available. With regards to how well it did during frontal collision tests, results were mostly in the green.
Back to the crash. According to the description of the video, it occurred in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and everybody who was involved survived, hopefully without any major injuries. Which, given the ferocity of the impact, is almost miraculous. Or, to be more pragmatic, it definitely goes to show how far modern cars have come safety-wise. Had this not have been a relatively new car but an older one, things could have ended quite differently.
As for the person driving the dashcam vehicle, they definitely lucked out by not making contact with the out of control VW sedan, although they did drive over some pretty large chunks of debris.
