Allstate has released its annual Best Drivers Report which examines the safest cities for drivers.

Created by analyzing claims information from the company’s policy holders, the data reveals the typical American driver will be involved in a collision once every ten years.

Where you live plays are large role in your chances of being involved in an accident and this year’s safest city was Brownsville, Texas. Residents there typically file a claim once every 13.6 years and this is -26.3% below the national average.

Brownsville was closely followed by Kansas City, Kansas and Boise, Idaho. Rounding out the top five were Huntsville, Alabama and Madison, Wisconsin.

The most dangerous city was Baltimore, Maryland where residents normally file a claim every 3.8 years. This is 163.2% higher than the national average.

Other cities at the bottom of the list include Boston, Massachusetts and Washington, DC. In both cities, drivers file a claim once every 3.9 years.

The study examined the 200 largest cities in the United States and found Miami, Florida improved the most as it jumped up 37 spots in the rankings. Spokane, Washington wasn’t as lucky as it dropped 12 spots.

The study also looked at the number of “hard-braking” events drivers typically face. Effectively meaning how often drivers slam on the brakes, the report says the average driver will experience 19 hard-braking events for every 1,000 miles (1,609 km) driven. However, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was ranked the worst as drivers there face the issue 42 times every 1,000 miles (1,609 km).

While the chances of being involved in an accident are low overall, 94% of collisions are caused, at least partially, by “preventable human factors.” These include things such as speeding, being distracted or driving drunk.
