Ford has already announced plans for a handful of new models, but it looks like there’s even more on the horizon.
While the company is in the process of phasing out sedans, the automaker actually plans to have more models in their lineup than they do today. According to The Detroit News, Ford’s executive vice president of product development and purchasing said the company’s North American lineup will expand from 20 models to 23 models by 2023.
Hau Thai-Tang didn’t go into specifics, but several of the new models have already been announced. These include the Bronco, Focus Active and Ranger. The Baby Bronco should also arrive before 2023, but Ford hasn’t revealed when the model will be launched or what it will actually be called.
Even more models are in the pipeline as Thai-Tang said the company will add a total of nine new nameplates over the course of the next few years. Given the popularity of trucks and crossovers, it comes as little surprise that seven of them will fall into these one of these categories.
Speaking of new models, Ford suggested familiar names such as Fusion and Taurus might not be going away. Instead, the automaker could tap into their name recognition and use the monikers on models that aren’t sedans.
Rumors have already hinted at this possibility as a report suggested Ford was working on a “high-roofed hatchback” to compete with the Subaru Outback. Little is known about the model, but sources told Bloomberg the car would be based on the “same mechanical underpinnings” as the current sedan.
