The new Jaguar I-Pace is the first premium battery electric model from an established manufacturer and it’s only natural that the media will compare it against Tesla’s own models.
Top Gear did exactly that, bringing a Tesla Model S 75D for a drag race against the electric Jaguar. And while the Model S isn’t the obvious rival to the I-Pace, it’s Tesla’s only model that’s priced around the same with the Jaguar, with the base Model X being significantly more expensive at £75,850 in the UK.
The Jaguar I-Pace starts from £63,495 while the Tesla Model S P75D costs from £68,950, making it the cheaper option, at least before you start playing with the options.
But the main reason we’re here isn’t to discuss pricing details but to see which of the two electric models is the faster on a straight line. The I-Pace offers 395hp (400PS) and 513lb-ft (696Nm) of torque, while the Tesla is packing 362hp (367PS) and 486lb-ft (659Nm) of torque.
Tesla claims a 0-60 in 4.2 seconds while the heavier Jaguar follows with 4.5 seconds for the same procedure. Numbers point towards Tesla’s side but Jaguar has repeatedly impressed everyone with its acceleration. Let’s find out who’s the winner, shall we?
