Between firms like Singer, Canepa, and Paul Stephens, there’s no shortage of people out there committed to restomodding Porsches. But this latest project isn’t being undertaken by any of them, nor by any competitor. This one’s being done by Porsche itself.
It’s called Project Gold, and Porsche Classic has been releasing a steady trickle of teaser videos to give us little hints at what to expect. And we’ve included all three publicized to date below for your viewing pleasure.
From what we can see so far, the project appears to be based around a 993-generation 911 Turbo – the last of the air-cooled models, which in and of itself has earned the mid-90s model something of a cult following. It was also the first Turbo to employ all-wheel drive to help channel all its power to the tarmac: 402 hp (300 kW), to be specific, from a 3.6-liter twin-turbo boxer six. The later Turbo S that followed two years after in 1997 was even more potent, with 450 hp (336 kW) – but only 183 of them were made.
Given its cult status, and the 70th anniversary which the project ostensibly aims to help celebrate, suitably painstaking level of attention to detail that Porsche Classic seems to be applying should come as little surprise – right down to the gold trim evidently featuring both inside and out.
That’s about all we know so far, but you can bet there’ll be more videos to follow before the finished product is revealed on August 24 (likely in Monterey). After that, Porschephiles can look forward to seeing it in the metal at the Rennsport Reunion on September 27, when it just might put all those independent restomodders in California to shame.
