It’s hard to believe Porsche introduced the redesigned Cayenne a year ago, but the company has released new information about the model’s Remote Park Assist system.
Since the Cayenne isn’t exactly tiny, parking the crossover can be an issue in confined spaces. Thankfully, the new Remote Park Assist system helps alleviate the burden as it allows the model to automatically park itself even if the driver is outside the vehicle.
As an example, the driver could be in a parking garage where the only open space is a tight fit without enough clearance to open the doors after the model is parked. While this would be a serious problem for most vehicles, it’s not an issue for the Cayenne.
Instead, owners can simply drive up to parking space and exit the vehicle. Once outside, the owner can open the Porsche app and select the Remote Park Assist function. All they have to do afterwards is press and hold the “OK” button until the Cayenne parks itself.
Porsche says the system works for parallel or perpendicular parking situations and the model can even negotiate its way around narrow garages without assistance. Owners can also use the app to have the vehicle leave the parking space so they can enter the model more easily.
While parking isn’t that hard for most drivers, the system relies on 12 ultrasonic sensors and four cameras to create a 360-degree view of the Cayenne’s surroundings. Information from the cameras and sensors is feed into the central driver assistance control unit which uses four processors to “coordinate twenty additional control units.”
Of course, safety is paramount and Porsche says the system has an “optimal level of caution.” As part of this, the remote parking system will automatically make adjustments or interrupt the parking process if it detects a pedestrian, a high curb or a bollard near the vehicle. Owners can also stop the system using the aforementioned app.
